Folk dance

The Folklore Section of the Applied Folk Arts Department focuses on educating the best teachers of folk dance, folk music and folk narratives. In order to achieve this goal, several courses are available for the further education of teachers.

There are three regularly announced accredited courses for teachers of folkdance. The courses usually last for three or four months, having two or three-hour sessions once or twice a week. The courses are accredited by the Hungarian Ministry of Education.

The "Regions and dances" course focuses on a different folkloristic region of Hungary each semester. It is a complex course covering the music, dances, holiday traditions and traditional children's' games of the chosen region, producing ample examples and methodological support. The course features ethnographers, folk dancers and schoolteachers of folkdance as guest lecturers.

The "Dance heritage of the Carpathian Basin" course is a four-weekend intensive training focusing on a different folkloristic region of Hungary each weekend. It is organized chiefly for experienced teachers of folkdance who wish to know more about the folk dance, folk music and traditions of specific Hungarian regions. However, all with more than five years of a folk dancer's experience can join. The weekend sessions may also be joined individually, without attending the other three weekends.

The "Playing and dancing at school" is for kindergarten and primary school teachers who wish to integrate folklore in their education program. The course offers both a theoretical and a practical introduction to Hungarian folkdance and its methodology, and it is compatible with the frame curriculum issued by the Hungarian Ministry of Education. No pervious knowledge of folk music or folkdance is required.
